Viacom vs. GooTube

by mike on March 13, 2007

Wow, it finally happened. Today, Viacom announced they have sued YouTube/Google and are seeking more than $1 billion in damages. Mark has been predicting this for quite a while, but I’m a bit surprised it happened so soon. Nevertheless, this is significant to all companies in the user-generated content space. Preventing copyright infringement is an issue that can no longer be ignored. You might get away with it while you’re small and building a community, but the minute you scale you’ll need to deal with this issue (along with monetization).
