Adobe’s Apollo

by mike on December 23, 2006

In the near future (hopefully 2007) Adobe will be releasing the much anticipated Apollo platform. Apollo is a cross-operating system runtime that bridges the gap between desktop and web applications. It will allow developers to transform web applications (especially RIA ones) built using Flash, Flex, HTML, Javascript and Ajax to desktop applications.

Web applications are inherently plagued by browser shortcomings and constraints. Apollo seeks to address a number of these. Here’s a short list:

  • Applications can run online or offline
  • Drag-and-drop from the desktop to the application
  • Access to the local filesystem
  • Better performance and caching mechanisms
  • Cross-platform support

Another really exciting aspect to this launch is the potential for a host of new startups around this technology. Everything from email to calendaring to blogging to photo/video sharing could be affected. The way we experience and interact with the web is going to change. Look for Apollo soon – I know I will.
