The number of people that blog has grown drastically over the last several years, but is still rather a “niche” phenomenon. Why is that? Well, I think there are a few main reasons. First off, most people are worried that they wouldn’t be able to contribute good content. The most common response is “I don’t know what I’d write about”. I say, pick an area you have expertise in or are passionate about. For example, this blog is mostly my random thoughts around things I’m interested in – blogging, technology, the internet, startups and entrepreneurship. I am by far no means an expert in any of these areas. Is anyone reading this stuff? I have no idea. Ok, I have some idea
. Secondly, a good number of people worry about whether others will read their material or dislike them. Fear is a powerful motivator, but how will you know if you don’t ever try? If people disagree with you, that’s fine. Get feedback and move on. Lastly, and more often than not overlooked, blogging takes a lot of time. I don’t care what these other bloggers say, gathering your thoughts, writing them down and customizing your site all take a considerable amount of time. Fitting this into your day is definitely tough. So far, the experience itself has been far more rewarding that I have expected. In closing, for all of you that are contemplating blogging and are mostly just “lurkers” get out there and contribute. Also, send me a link to your blog and I’ll check it out. Happy blogging!
Why don’t more people blog?
