Blogging experience so far …

by mike on March 24, 2006

So, I’ve been “lurking” on blogs for the last several years and regularly read a handful of them. This is my first go around at consistently publishing content via a blog. I just wanted to quickly comment on my experiences so far. First off, I have found that customizing one’s blog requires significant effort. I’m not sure if this is blogspot specific, but the whole process takes considerable time. I can only imagine how long it would take if I didn’t have a technical background. This might be a big reason why so many people do not blog. That leads me to, the general technical requirements of having a blog. There is no way someone without a tehnical background could use blogspot. I stand behind this. Just looking at the template editor is daunting if you aren’t familiar with html syntax. The only exception that I see is if someone who is non-technical just strictly sticks to posting and nothing else such as advanced customization. But I wouldn’t really understand that b/c the whole point to having a blog is to express yourself. How do you do that? By customizing your site. Am I wrong?

I’m not complaining, merely pointing out some of the shortcomings that I’ve experienced. Overall, there have been many more positives than negatives. Blogging forces you to really think about your life, career, family and other topics that interest you. Best of all, it gets you off the sidelines and in the game!
